For the record, here is how the stead rest works on the MX7.
The cord on the bottom is just a proximity switch and should be left alone. It looks like a 3 prong electrical connection. So if it ever is taken off or pops off (it did tonight) find the location at which the cord will plug into the switch and then tighten the nut.
The two valves at the back of the steady rest control how fast it raises and lowers. If they are not set correctly the steady rest will either violently shoot up or down (not enough back pressure) or it will not move at all (too much back pressure canceling out the foward pressure). If there is too much back pressure it will seem like the steady rest is broken because it doesn't move up or down at all.
There is a knob on each valve. Pull it out slightly to adjust it and then push it back in to lock it. Turning counter clockwise on either valve will lower the back pressure and allow it to raise and lower. There are several revolutions to the max and to the min. The knob will stop turning when it hits it's limit. If adjusting is needed, start with both knobs turned all the way counter clockwise.
This should make the steady rest raise and lower very quickly. Slowly turn the top knob clockwise while raising and lowering the rest. It should begin to raise up more smoothly while still lowering very quickly. Then turn the lower knob clockwise while raising and lower rest. It should begin to drop more smoothly the more you turn the knob.
